Archaeological finding underneath the Theater Columbus

A team of investigators found material of daily use of half-full of century XIX

A group of investigators of the Center of Urban Archaeology of the Faculty of Architecture of the UBA is led the study of an underground structure discovered by personnel of the Theater Columbus.

The equipment of investigation conformed by the conservative Marina Ojero, the archaeologist Mónica Carminati, the architect Guillermo Páez and students of the UBA, began working with documentation of archives to determine the historical antecedents of the zone, and could establish that the esplanade located in the passage Arturo Toscanini is one of the few sites of the City of Buenos Aires that has not undergone alterations from half-full of century XIX.

The excavation of the well located underneath the perrons of the Toscanini passage has reached a depth of 5 meters.

The material found until the moment is of extreme interest as much by its diversity as by his amount, it is made up of English stoneware of different manufactures and decoration, utilitarian Spanish ceramics and diverse objects of daily use of the time.

The found objects are being transferred to the Center of Urban Archaeology of the UBA, where it will be come to his washing, classification, consolidation and interpretation.
